京都・西陣の織匠、平居幹央氏が手がけた西陣織を、額装作品として仕立てました。

箱根にある早雲寺の筆台に描かれた文様をもとに図案化した意匠で、金襴の世界では古くから織り継がれてきた柄のひとつです。花や草木が蔓状に伸びやかに描かれ、金地に赤、青、緑、紫などの色彩を配した華やかな文様が特徴です。

こうした由緒ある裂地の意匠は「名物裂」と呼ばれ、茶道具の仕覆や表装など、さまざまな用途に用いられてきました。本作品では、その伝統的な文様を西陣織で織り上げ、織物ならではの豊かな色彩と細やかな表現を楽しめる一幅に仕上げています。

Sōunji Nishijin-ori Framed Artwork

This Nishijin-ori textile was created by Mikio Hirai, a Nishijin weaver based in Kyoto, and presented as a framed artwork.

The design is based on a motif depicted on a brush rest at Sōunji Temple in Hakone. It is one of the traditional patterns that has long been woven in the kinran tradition, known for its richly decorated textiles. Flowers and plants extend gracefully in flowing vine-like forms, set against a gold ground with vibrant accents of red, blue, green, and purple.

Designs found on historic textiles such as this are known as meibutsu-gire, renowned textiles that have been treasured and used in various traditional arts. They have traditionally been used for tea ceremony utensil pouches, mounting fabrics for hanging scrolls, and other applications. This work reinterprets the traditional motif in Nishijin-ori, showcasing the rich colors and intricate detail that are characteristic of handwoven textiles.
