Why Kimono Dresses? / なぜ着物ドレスなのか

The reason Prosperity Japan introduces kimono dresses can be traced back to an encounter with one remarkable woman.
The mother of a female director whom I have worked with since founding my television production company in 2007 spent more than fifty years creating garments from repurposed kimono. Originally a teacher of both traditional Japanese dressmaking and Western tailoring, she attracted many students and organized annual fashion shows showcasing their creations.
I had the opportunity to attend one of these shows, and what left the strongest impression on me was the sight of the participants confidently walking the runway in dresses they had made themselves from kimono. Their joy and pride were unmistakable.
By transforming kimono into contemporary clothing, these beautiful textiles can continue to be worn and appreciated in modern daily life. Kimono dresses also offer people outside Japan an accessible way to experience the beauty of Japan’s kimono culture.
Inspired by this vision, Prosperity Japan has included kimono dresses as one of its projects since its founding. Today, the dresses are crafted by women in their sixties to eighties who studied under her guidance.
The artisans involved possess exceptional skills developed over many decades. They carefully create each piece while taking pride in knowing that their craftsmanship continues to bring joy to others and remains valued in society. We believe that kimono dresses do more than give dormant kimono a new life—they also help pass on Japan’s traditions of craftsmanship, experience, and creativity to future generations.
