The Meaning Behind the Name “Prosperity” / 「Prosperity」という名前に込めた想い

The name Prosperity Japan reflects our hope that Japan may experience prosperity once again. The prosperity we envision, however, is not defined by economic success alone.

What we seek is a future in which Japan’s traditional techniques and cultural practices continue to be passed down from generation to generation. In that future, the artisans who sustain these traditions, the people who use and cherish the object, and all who support this cultural ecosystem are able to flourish both economically and spiritually.

Above all, Prosperity Japan places great importance on continuity. These traditions must endure, and the artisans who carry them forward must be able to take pride in their work with dignity. Techniques and sensibilities refined over long periods of time represent an irreplaceable cultural inheritance. If they were to disappear simply because they do not sell or are not properly valued, the loss to Japan would be immeasurable.

There is another principle that Prosperity Japan holds close. It is the commitment to share Japan’s distinctive spirit with the world with honesty and respect.

Whenever we witness the devastation caused by the war between Russia and Ukraine, or the tragic situation unfolding in Gaza, we cannot help but reflect on a difficult question. If the spirit of compassion and consideration for others long cherished by the Japanese people were more deeply rooted around the world, might conflicts not have reached such devastating levels?

The objects created through these traditions are far more than material possessions. They embody values cultivated within Japanese culture, including living in harmony with nature, respecting others, and maintaining balance.

By passing on not only techniques but also the philosophies and sense of pride embedded within them, we believe it is possible to nurture the true prosperity of Japanese culture, a prosperity that continues into the future.

Prosperity Japanという名前には、「日本に、再び繁栄が訪れますように」という願いが込められています。ただし、ここで言う「繁栄（Prosperity）」は、単なる経済的な成功を指しているわけではありません。

私たちが思い描いているのは、日本の伝統工芸が未来へと受け継がれていくことはもちろん、それを支える作り手である職人、その品を手にし、使い、受け継ぐ人、そしてこの事業に関わるすべての人が、経済的にも、そして精神的にも豊かになっていくことです。

Prosperity Japanが何よりも大切にしているのは、工芸が継続していくこと、そして職人が自らの仕事に尊厳と誇りを持てることです。長い時間をかけて培われてきた技術や感性が、「売れないから」「評価されないから」という理由で途切れてしまうというのは、日本にとって計り知れない損失だと、私たちは考えています。

もう一つ、Prosperity Japanが大切にしている価値があります。それは、日本独自の精神性を、正しく、誠実に世界へ伝えることです。

ロシア・ウクライナ戦争や、中東ガザ地区の惨状に触れるたび、もし世界に、日本人が大切にしてきた「他者を思いやる心」が広がっていたなら、争いはこれほどまでに深刻なものにならなかったのではないか。そう感じずにはいられません。

工芸品は、単なるモノではありません。そこには、自然と共に生き、他者を尊び、調和を重んじてきた日本人の価値観が宿っています。思想と技術、そして誇りを、次の時代へと手渡していくその先に、日本文化の真の繁栄、Prosperityがあると、私たちは信じています。
