“Prosperity Japan” is a company derived fromThe Magnolia Company. The Magnolia Company is a TV production company founded in Harajuku, Tokyo in the spring of 2007, and has been involved in TV production for NHK and NHK World (The International arm of Japan state controlled public broadcasting corporation) for many years. NHK World broadcasts a variety of Japan-related programming in multiple language in 170 countries and territories worldwide. Many of these programs introduce traditional crafts and unique culture, and among them are artists and artisans whose efforts many Japanese people remain unaware of. Those who make things tend to be not so good at publicity. For such individuals, we aim to introduce their wonderful Japanese products made with dedication and diligence to overseas buyers interested in Japan and bring a sense of joy to everyone involved.
Our Philosophy
Japan is home to the world's oldest company, with a history stretching from the year 578 to the present day. This remarkable company, known as Kongo Gumi, was responsible for constructing Japan's first Buddhist temple. Even today, they specialize in wooden structures, handling construction, restoration, and repair of shrines, temples, castles, and cultural heritage sites. While making use of modern technology, they strive to preserve ancient methods. A traditional company with a history of over a millennium, they’ve even been recognized in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Japan boasts more than ten companies with histories of over a thousand years, steadfastly supporting Japanese tradition. They have been instrumental in preserving transitional culture, customs, landscape, entertainment, and manufacturing, passing them down to the present day. However, companies that preserve history and tradition do not always have a presence in the modern world.
Our company shares the distinctiveness of Japan with the world through the production of TV programs and video content. Through this, we have come to see that, as Japanese ourselves, we were often unaware, whether by accident or intention, of the quintessentially Japanese spirit that has existed since ancient times. We have made it our goal to reexamine Japan, to rediscover “Unfamiliar Japan.” Japan is an unfamiliar country that, while incorporating the cultures and customs of other nations, preserves a profound tradition. We see it as our mission to rekindle the spirit of “Prosperity Japan”
From the CEO
Satsuki Shidara
I've been running a production company in Tokyo for 17 years. We are mainly involved in program production for NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation, the only public broadcaster in Japan) and NHK World (NHK's international broadcasting service, broadcasting to 170 countries worldwide). NHK World offers informational programming on Japan, including traditional Japanese culture and crafts.
Knowing that many of these are now dying out due to problems such as aging artisans and a lack of successors, I have come to feel that the situation in Japan is problematic in ways, and I cannot watch it continue. With this in mind, I've started a new project, delivering the earnestly made products of Japan to the world; supporting artisans by featuring and and selling what they make. To accomplish this, I have established a new company, "Prosperity Japan". Moving forward, my mission is to contribute to society by serving as a bridge between Japan and the rest of the world.
